Challenge
The Boy Scouts of America had a platform named Scoutbook, which provided the entire Scouting community with access to their scouting information. To enhance the tracking of information for specific roles, the Boy Scouts of America decided to divide the data from Scoutbook into different platforms/applications, aiming to facilitate tasks for the users.
Scouting goals for Internet Advancement:
Create a web app that gives users access to all scouting information on their phones, allowing councils, leaders, and parents to record their units' accomplishments.
Make complex functions easier to understand.
Digitalize processes and reduce the number of steps to increase the participation of the unit leaders in scouting activities.

Steps taken to address projects goals
The main functionalities of Scoutbook were identified and split into two platforms: Internet advancement and Scoutbook App.
All features in Scoutbook were carefully reviewed by the product owner and project manager to decide which ones of them would be included in Internet Advancement.
User flows were created alongside the product owner, project manager, and tech lead to track features for different profiles.
There were some mockups done, so, in order to refine the experience, the design team did some heuristic evaluations and redesign them.
Ideation activities and user stories were applied to make all processes inside Internet Advancement easy to understand and optimized for small devices.

Solution
Old mockups were revamped with the new and updated design system in order to have consistency with all the other scouting platforms.

Before and after of user settings.
As the introduction of Internet Advancement serves as an alternative to replacing Scoutbook, we decided to implement a walkthrough to guide users on how to use and access the scouting tools from this new platform.

As one person can have multiple roles in scouting, we decided to include features that allow users to switch between different roles, ensuring that the information presented to them aligns with their respective permissions based on their roles
The scouting programs' color palette was implemented to facilitate the recognition of scouting units.

Achievements
Since the implementation of a proper workflow that reduces steps in some processes such as rechartering, participation in updating units has increased.
The decision of using colors in the scouts' profiles made it easier to identify the units to which the scouts belonged.
The switcher role feature implemented to facilitate the management of units without changing accounts helped reduce the number of accounts created and the number of actions taken from the users.

My Learnings
Iterate fast when developing big products helps to save time and money.
Working side by side with the product manager in all the phases of a product would give you better knowledge when making design decisions.
As designers, we need to understand that business goals and user needs may not be aligned, but we should find a way to gather their needs and find a middle point that can be useful for both.
